  History of

The First Battalion Ninth Marines Network, Inc.

"The Walking Dead"

Like most units in our beloved Marine Corps, the First Battalion Ninth Marines have a long and proud history of serving the United States.

Since its activation in 1942 the Battalion has seen combat in some of the most recognized operations in American and Marine Corps history. From Bougainville, Iwo Jima and Northern Solomons during World War II to Con Thien, Khe Sanh, “The Street Without Joy” and Dewey Canyon in Vietnam. The Marines and Corpsmen assigned to this Battalion have upheld the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps. In more recent times our Battalion has been sent to fight during Operation Desert Storm and sent to help keep the peace in Somalia. The Marine Corps saw fit to retire our colors again in September of 1994.

The First Battalion Ninth Marines Network, Inc. is a veteran’s organization that consists of Marines and Navy Corpsmen who had the honor of serving their county proudly and gallantly with the 1st Battalion 9th Marines.

The organization was founded in 1988 by Roger W. Liggon Sr., after a Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home rally in Cleveland, Ohio with thirteen Vietnam veterans. The Network was formed for Marines and Corpsmen who served in the Republic of South Vietnam where the Battalion earned the name, “THE WALKING DEAD,” to reunite the men who served and to help heal the wounds of battles past. As we enter the year 2005, we have grown to a mailing list of more than 1,100 members which also includes the family members of Marines and Corpsmen that were killed in action.

During the 1996 National Reunion the membership voted to open the organization to all Marines and Corpsmen who had the honor to serve under the colors of the First Battalion Ninth Marines and those that were attached to the Battalion.

Our goals and purpose remain the same. That is to reunite the men who served proudly and gallantly with the Battalion and to make sure that the deeds of the Battalion and men who gave their all are not forgotten.

We have had eight successful reunions with the last in Washington, D.C.

If you choose to apply for membership, follow the instructions below.  Once your membership is approved, your name will be added to our database and you will be sent instructions to access our on-line message forum called the "Web-Board".  Your name will be added to our mailing list which will ensure that you receive future editions of our newsletter, “The Proud Warrior” and are notified of future events and new members.

We have seen the Network grow since its beginning continue to grow. We need your membership and your support.
